A drug worse than copium
It starts with E.
If you don’t expect to learn anything from this email and just want the song, it’s at the bottom of the email where it always is
Expectations are one heck of a drug.
I was a victim of its effects after buying a fancy device, expecting to “write more content with it.”
2 weeks later and I've barely touched the thing.
So what happened?
In short, I didn't face the reason I’m not writing in the first place: Procrastination.
I expected a new machine to be a “magic reset button” for a terrible habit and then acted surprised when it blew up in my face.
You may be a victim of this, too,
It could be as expecting yourself to magically reset and become a new person when the new year rolls around, or when the next month begins, or when Monday comes.
But it don’t work like that.
Life is not a single point in time. Where you are now is the result of all the decisions you've made this far.
So what's the solution?
Take enough inventory of your decisions up to this point to find the hole in the boat.
Is it a pain in the ass? Absolutely.
Is it worth it? Only you can find that out.
One of my goals this year is to think clearer after years of living in autopilot.
After living on autopilot for decades, it’s a tall order, so I have to start by realizing that my mind is an absolute wasteland. I have to find that gap, which is “cleaning it up.”
No matter what you choose, you must begin by knowing where you are—not where you think you are, but where you TRULY are.
That's a tough conversation you'll have to do with yourself.
So, if you’re up for the challenge, take out a notebook, title it "Where I am right now," and be brutally honest.
Once you know where you are, write down where you want to be.
Only then will you know what the gap is and how to start filling it.
That is how you manage expectations.
And if you're looking for a song to help you get in that mindset, look no further than today's song.
This is a favorite of mine for reflective states.
The easygoing sounds, the ambiance that builds in the beginning as you organize your thoughts, and the gorgeous melody that guides you for the rest of the song
All of it makes for a gorgeous experience that is perfect anytime you want to slow down your thoughts.
Above all, This song is a simple listen that you can keep in your back pocket for when you need to fall back and reassess.
Njoy.
Genre: Ambient
Always Expecting Forward
