Will electronic music ever be mainstream again?

Pulling out the cracked Crystal Ball

I saw this post on Reddit today:

My trash take?

Yeah, it will rise once again to be the dominant genre (which will last 2-3 years). Mostly in the Can’tmerican Empire. It’s already a mainstay of Yuropean culture, lol.

But from what I've heard, hip hop is starting to have a Roman Empire-style collapse. (You can see the cracks with the whole Kanye situation, lol.)

The vacuum resulting from that collapse may be filled by the next big thing that's been growing in size:

DUBSTEP BAYBEE.

Just kidding lol.

Even though dubstep is still the fastest-growing genre I’ve seen, its sound will be its downfall.

No matter how many legions of bass-addicted people it has, its raw and unfiltered sound will forever be its main bottleneck to the mainstream.

Not everyone enjoys the synthetic or bassy sounds from it. This also includes house and adjacent genres.

And if that’s not enough, songs without lyrics are STILL a very tough sell to most people. (No, the current electronic lyric songs won’t make the cut. 2/10 are actually good.)

I do believe it's better that way. Hell, maybe it’s for the best EDM doesn’t reach mainstream again.

The innovation of the 2012 era (Zedd, Swedish House Mafia, Avicii, etc.) has reached a breaking point. This is a big reason the scene became a cash machine in which artists are encouraged to produce slop to make real money.

I mean just LOOK AT MARSHMELLO OR ALAN WALKER OR ALOK OR ANY OF THESE SLOP HOUSE ARTISTS.

There's so much more new fantastic sound that I simply don't think can reach the mainstream because the majority of people WON’T like it.

And that's because the best new sound is coming from East.

Sounds from the UK, Netherlands, and Germany are still growing. In fact, the Netherlands has a huge number of great artists.

Eastern Europe is also starting to claim its stake. The talent coming out of those countries is amazing.

America has been behind in the electronic music realm. At least from what I’ve seen and heard.

In any case, that’s just what the voices in my walls crystal ball says.

And to drive the point home, here's a song from Cloudrider. He’s a Netherland Neanderthal who I think showcases the amazing sound coming out from the Trading Land.

It’s also what I imagine the next wave of “mainstream electronic music” will sound like.

Simple groovy beats, not too obnoxious lyrics, and a good beat that you can repeat.

And hey, as a triple bonus, this can be a great valentines song if you haven’t been fortunate enough to find someone (it’s overrated anyway)

Njoy!

P.S. What do you think is going to happen? It’s very interesting to see the discussion around this.
