Consumane - Phonk House

Yesterday I said that this genre made some of the best songs in the game.

This is one of those. The whole album is pretty good.

Doesn’t sound much like standard “Phonk” but it still has the foundations.

This is from Russian Rodent Consumane.

Just like the album cover suggests, all songs are full of “darker” sounds. This is the relaxing side of it. Some others are a lot more aggressive.

The thing it does well is the variations in repetition

It’s a very simple song, but it sounds SO GOOD. Every sound crawls into your brain and leaves you hypnotized.

💭 Quick Drivel

Today’s song may come as a surprise.

However I want to talk more about a genre I mentioned yesterday.

Phonk. (Just realized how SILLY of a name this is. Who came up with this?)

They say “Rome wasn’t built in a day but it burnt in one.”

Phonk fits that saying to a tee.

The genre had a pretty active year from late 2020 to early 2022, then died just as fast as it surged.

It seems that Russians single-handedly created and grew the genre before another faction came in and destroyed it forever.

You might think that’s an exaggeration. But if you look into it, ALL the “popular” songs came out in 2021.

Seriously. Try to look up “best of phonk,” and all the “golden age” tracks you heard on TikTok were from that one year lmfao.

So how did it fall so quickly?

Mostly because the whole thing got tied up with cringe videos and the innovation died pretty quick.

Which isn’t surprising when this is the extent of 80% of the songs:

Then IMMEDIATELY after release, some other CLOWN will grab the song, SLOW IT DOWN BY LIKE 5BPM AND…

This killed the genre faster than anything else. Most of the “defining” artists have hit an existential crisis. Some are still releasing but it just sounds… directionless.

“Oh but Sloptify has a phonk playlist. There’s no way it’s DEAD” I hear some say.

Well lets check it out shall we?

BROTHER. THERE ARE 100 SONGS IN THAT PLAYLIST.

THERE ARE ALBUMS THAT ARE LONGER THAN THAT HAHAHA.

What are we doing here lmfao.

I tried listening to a couple and had to turn it off immediately after.

Hearing cutlery scrape dishes for 5 hours on repeat sounds 10 billion times better than whatever haunts that cursed playlist.

WHICH IS INSANE AS THESE ARE 1-2 MINUTE SONGS MAX.

Who is listening to this stuff? I don’t judge anyone on their music taste out of principle, but I really want to understand.

Has this genre truly devolved to cringe tiktok “Aurafarm” videos? Can’t even tell anymore.

But hey, at least it's had more “evolution” than riddim ever did! (gotta get that shot in)

However, some standout artists were actually making fun stuff during that 14-month period of relevance.

Might explore some others this week. Might just explore genres that have been rising and falling.
