"I'm sure it's going to be fine!"
What's the worst that could happen?
4:27 PM. June 12, 2024
I’m standing in the garage with my boss and her assistant while they’re on a smoke break.
“You’re going NOW?!” Says the assistant to me. “It’s the worst possible time.”
She’s not wrong, it’s been raining all day and the government sent at least 3 different flood warnings.
“I know, but I have to go now, there’s something very important to take care of” I reply. “But I’m sure it’s going to be fine!”
“Alright, just let us know how it goes” Says my boss, putting out her cigarette “Be careful out there.”
I wave goodbye and get on my car.
The clock says 4:38 PM.
I exit the wage cage garage and turn into the main street.
In front is a line of cars. The first out of ten traffic lights is green and yet no one is moving.
I join the line and start playing Astronaut - Rain, the song sent that fateful day.
4:50 PM. The line has barely moved an inch. I’m still at the first traffic light.
I start seeing how it was a bad idea, unfortunately the U-Turn is 1 mile away and there is no point.
I NEED to get home.
5:10 The line gets moving a bit faster. I’m now at the fourth traffic light
As I go through, flooding and stuck cars are everywhere.
The stuck cars? Sedans.
“Wow, that must suck” I say while driving past deep puddles.
5:50 I’m by the eight traffic light. The bridge is within sight and I just have to pass through this flooded section with 3 stuck sedans.
“Well. Here goes nothing.”
I barely work my way through it and get to the bridge.
“That was a close call” I say while crossing
All that’s left is a mile stretch to get home.
I look over the bridge and see the short way completely flooded. There’s 2 trucks that seem to be stuck.
It’s a no go for this car.
The second option is a 2 mile stretch.
“I’m sure it’s going to be fine!” I say to myself “What could possibly go wrong?!”
I get off the bridge and make my way to the second route.
But as I get close, all in sight is a graveyard.
A sedan, SUV and lifted truck are stuck in the middle of the road.
It’s too late to turn back. The only way to make it is forward.
I start traversing through when by I hear a terrible noise as I’m in the middle of the road.
Ohno.
I rush a bit to get out of the puddle and once I’m out…
BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP
A warning message flashes of me.
“PLEASE CHECK HYBRID SYSTEM”
The dreaded “Check engine light” turns on.
I stop for a second and assess the situation. It’s 6:00 PM. I was supposed to be there at 3:00 PM.
My phone rings.
I pick up, knowing full well what it’s about…
“WHERE ARE YOU? YOU NEED TO MAKE IT HOME SOON, THEY’RE SAYING IT’S GOING TO GET WORSE.”
“I’m almost there. It’s just this quick stretch” I reply.
“Okay. Be careful but please make it home soon…” She says before hanging up.
I look at the road in front of me. It’s flooded worse than the first section before the bridge.
As I drive, the beep gets louder, the engine starts stalling, and just as I’m in the middle of the second puddle…
My car stops.
And turns off.
the “PLEASE CHECK HYBRID SYSTEM” message turns into…
“ACTIVATING EMERGENCY BATTERY. PLEASE PARK AND TURN OFF AND ON THE CAR. ACTIVATING EMERGENCY BATTERY, PLEASE PARK AND TURN OFF AND ON THE CAR”
I try parking when I realize…
The car is FLOATING on the water.
BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP
I push on the accelerator. Nothing happens.
ACTIVATING EMERGENCY BATTERY. PLEASE PARK AND TURN OFF AND ON THE CAR. ACTIVATING EMERGENCY BATTERY, PLEASE PARK AND TURN OFF AND ON THE CAR
I push the accelerator again. Nothing happens.
BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP
Suddenly. something hits the back of my car, pushing it back into the road.
"BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE-”
