Welcome to Sunday Singles!
Every Sunday either Hyperoxia or I will send you a micro-review of a single song.
Yes. I know it’s SATURDAY. A very important email is going out tomorrow so I’m just doing it today.
Yes the title of this email makes a very bold claim. But this is a song I revisted while going through my “Hifi Pilgrimage” and I can confidently say:
It’s peak.
Song Info
Title: Joyryde - IM GONE
Release Date: 2/21/2019
Genre: Speed House
Runtime: 4:45
Has a cool music video
Artist Lore
Joyryde is a car-enjoying American’t responsible for single-handedly reviving speed house. His production and DJ sets are OUT of this world.
He’s been in the game for DECADES. He was first known as Eskimo and then produced timeless HEATERS under Let’s Be Friends back in 2014.
He has a real knack for energy and speed. Every single one of his songs can send you to the flow zone.
Even with a small discography, every song pushes the envelope in sound and production.
His album BRAVE is also considered one of the best electronic albums of all time. He created the album after his spinal disk replacement. The album cover is an X-ray of the spine of the painter Frida Kahlo.
What weakness does this man have? You’ll have to read until the end of this email to find out.
The Great
This is a song I heard in 2019. It was supposed to be part of an EP.
Of course, the EP got stuck in “coming soon ™” status and became an album a whole year later.
This is what Joyryde himself said about the song:
“IM GONE is a song that I’ll cherish my entire life. I started it while recovering from back surgery on maximum-strength opioid pills. Some parts I don’t remember writing. On those days, I realized what it was like to feel my mental health slipping.
I’m grateful to have music and JOYRYDE in my life, because that’s what pulled me back into the strongest version of myself I’ve ever been. When I saw the light at the end of the recovery, it forced the rest of the album out of me. I’ve never been more attached to something that wasn’t alive.”
And this is something you can HEAR in the mf song.
From start to finish this song sounds like a journey.
Just like a car, it starts off “slowly”
And it quickly grabs steam as you press on the accelerator.
It’s chaotic and fun. The speed gets interrupted by small bouts of a slower sound (as if the car was shifting speeds) and it STILL sounds like it’s going fast.
And the details? Oh my lord.
I’ve never heard car noises turned into effective sounds but this guy makes it happen.
The melodies are ON POINT. I swear this song goes through like 5 melodies across the two genres it blends.
But man, this song was produced with love and care. Everything from the kicks to the bass sounds pristine and engineered for peak rhythm.
It’s one of the most unique songs you will ever hear.
The one gripe with it.
When I first heard it I hated it. Especially the rap at the start and trappy midsection. It seemed disconnected from the main song and ruined it for me.
It took a couple of listens and then I forgot about it.
A couple of months later the melody started living rent free and I returned to give it a second listen.
6 years later, this song is a testament to how AMAZING electronic music is.
It unfortunately takes some time to enjoy. The first listen may elicit the same response. So give it a listen and come back in a couple months. You’ll understand.
Wrappin it up
This guy HAS to hop back on the mf DAW. He hasn’t released a song ever since the album release. Mostly because of health issues.
He’s the Space Laces of Speed House. Every release advances the genre by 10 years.
Even though BRAVE is reaching its 6th year, it STILL sounds new. No one can do it like Joyryde. Maybe ALRT but even then it’s not the same.
So do yourself a favor and experience this Audible Gold.
Njoy.
Similar to it
This is similar in the sense that it has a rap lead that adds a dash of speed and amazing sounds. It’s honestly really fun and hits harder during night drives.
It’s from the same masterwork album, and I heavily recommend you give the whole thing a listen.
