🍱 Delicacy of the Day

Juche - Mental Loop

Man, it feels like we’re digging graves here to find these songs.

Future Love Story by Salty Spaniard Juche is a foundational album for Wave.

We’ve showcased this fella a couple times before. Its kinda hard to talk about Wave without mentioning this guy.

He’s an expert in creating soundscapes that get you into a certain state of mind.

Everything sounds carefully engineered. There’s the right amount of sound so that you can get lost in the music.

The most impressive thing is how much “depth” he’s been able to give the genre.

Sure, there’s a bit of an “acquired taste” to his music, but its still a must listen if you enjoy feeling like you’re in the future.

This song in particular has a mix of speed without actually being fast.

The best way I can describe it is like cruising at 140mph (or 225kmph) while feeling like you’re going at 50mph (or 80kmph).

Theres such an amazing balance between tempo and sound. It might not have aged as well, but there’s still a lot to like from this song.

If you’ve never heard of Wave before, this is the best introduction I can give you.

Njoy.

💭 Quick Drivel

Today on the Genre Graveyard™ we got Wave!

The genre really started in 2018.

But it got REALLY popular during the 2020 - 2022 pandemic rush.

This one focused on synth-heavy, slow melodies that gave an “ethereal” feeling.

You might recognize it with artists like Noah B, Juche, and Skeler.

If none of these names ring a bell…

Well, I don’t blame you hahaha.

I also know little about this whole genre.

However, co-host Hyperoxia is the resident Wave expert!

He was a huge fan and followed the rise and fall.

I managed to kidnap him at gunpoint get him to share his insights!

Take it away!

Hyperoxia Corner:

someone please help

“I think wave REALLY started dying when artists started branching out to other sibling genres.

Like wave has trance(Ish) genetics, right?

Yerbby was a big wave producer iirc. Under yerbownik though.

Then he moved to trance

There’s some wave songs I have saved that definitely have some like, trance ideas incorporated.

And I think maybe once they got a bit more used to incorporating trance sounds into their music, they kinda just continued down that path.

Because trance is already an established genre.”

Hz: Yeah yerby is incredible. First successful trance artist under 40.

Hyperoxia: “LMAO. Yeah.

Anyway as I was saying…

Whereas wave is new, and so naturally you have to wait for an audience to actually approach the genre for it to be feasible

I honestly think it was real big during Covid, when everything started to slow down

And wave isn’t typically like…

It’s not festival music.

I also don’t think there’s any real innovation in wave anymore

Like I listen to one for 20 seconds and I gotta turn it off

It sounds sorta dated too?”

After that I sidetracked the conversation to other matters in the overarching genre.

Maybe one day the whole transcript will be released as there was a lot of “what’s going on in the industry” insights.

That said, you might recognize these same points about Phonk. (Died fast, sounds soulless, aged not too well).

Except the difference is that Wave got into “Beatport Genre” status.

…Which I guess counts as “being recognized as a real country or something”

Nowadays the whole genre is kinda dead. There’s a handful of artists (like 2 lmao) that still ACTIVELY contribute but most have branched out into other domains.

And even though the genre got to have some DJ mixes and live events it never made it to “Festival level”.

It seems that the genres that spawned from covid didn’t last very long.

Mostly because they were made during a time when you were forced into “headphone music.”

And then, 2022 rolls around, festivals are back in the menu, and everyone is back to rave music!

Which is probably why tech house is FLOODED with absolute slop. The demand is for whatever reason too high.

In any case, that is the tale of Wave. There was a subset called “Hard Wave” but that one died much sooner and is only worth a mention in passing.

That said, some people are still trying to keep the genre alive.

Doing some research for this email helped me find a signal or two. Small things.

But only time will tell. And if it does come back, you’ll hear about it thanks to The Dumpster™.

Until then…
