🍱 Delicacy of the Day

Leaving Laurel - Falling Apart

Despite it being Fridee, I got a chill one for you today.

This is by Canadian Cretin duo Leaving Laurel.

It’s a relaxing and guitar heavy song that can only be described as “season changing into fall”

Granted, we’re still in the middle of summer.

But this is a song that played while the story below was happening and it really helped keep things calm.

I hope that it does the same for you.

Njoy.

💭 Quick Drivel

For the next 27 days I’ll be exploring the ridiculous trip from last year

I didn’t have time to write it when it happened. So why not take advantage of Nostalgia Year to re-live some memories, eh?

If you don’t mind or care (no blame there), enjoy the hand-picked songs that made up this trip a lot more special. They’re even better than the amazing stuff we regularly send.

10am.

I wake up to the insane heat in the room.

The AC doesn’t seem to be that powerful, and the heat is genuinely unbearable. (Even as a Florida creature)

So it's time to hit up the host and let them know about this problem.

After waiting 30 minutes for a reply the best they can say is to “put the temperature lower.”

I told them it's at the lowest setting, and their turbo mode only provides temporary relief for 10 minutes before shutting down.

…to which they humbly request not to max out the turbo mode as it wastes a lot of energy.

Since they didn’t seem too keen on heping out, I brought up the fact that one of their windows has a “LITTLE” CRACK IN IT.

How does this even hapen dawg lmfao.

To which they said “no its okay! Don’t worry! Just turn the AC down and be patient while the room cools down.”

At this point it was like talking to a wall that only knew 2 replies so I escalated it to Airbnb support.

i also start looking for other airbnbs to relocate to.

…the problem was that every single one was either

  1. 10x the price

  2. Incredibly far out from the main city.

So I was pretty much stuck in that Airbnb unless I coughed up another grand to get to this new place.

It looked like I had to cancel and rework the entire trip (as I was leaving for another city the next day) because of this situation.

Thankfully, it seems that after Airbnb support saw the little crack in the window they also escalated the situation.

Because shortly after the host DECIDED TO SEND AN AC GUY TO CHECK IT OUT!

… and asked that I sit tight for the guy to arrive and help him out!

Normally, this would have been unacceptable and grounds for a full refund request.

Except I REALLY needed the rest day.

So being forced to stop and take it easy was probably the best outcome.

I thanked the host for figuring out the problem and asked when the AC guy was coming.

“Very soon! I’ll let you know when he’s there”

3 HOURS LATER

The AC guy rings the bell.

I open the door and he immediately startes speaking to me in Korean.

Unsure of what he said I smile and do my best to explain that the AC isn’t working using hand and arm signs.

He looks confused, and we keep trying this hand signal game for a good 10 minutes.

…until he gives up and decides to call the host.

2 minutes later (with some light yelling) he gets to work.

An hour later he finishes the repair.

He essentially said that there was no more coolant and that the unit hadn’t been cleaned or maintained in MONTHS.

Then assured that everything should work now and left.

So overall, all’s well that ends well.

After that I decided to get out there and see what Korea was about!

  1. Train ride to first location.

There is something strange about Korean train stations.

There’s Fire-survival gear cabinets EVERYWHERE.

Gas masks, fire extinguishers, and anything you’d need to make it out in case of fire.

At first I thought it was station-specific.

But then I saw it at the second station...

Then I saw it at every station.

More, every train had “what to do if the train catches fire” constantly playing.

So what in the world happened to prevent train fires at this scale?

Well, apparently some random guy lit a train on fire back in 2007 which killed a bunch of people and ever since there’s been a lot of measures to prevent it from happening again.

This proved successful when someone tried the same thing in 2016 and was quickly thwarted.

Many case lessons in there.

  1. Gyeongbokgung Palace

This was one of the biggest and main attractions.

The only thing about it is that

THESE PLACES ARE HUGE.

Everything seems to be far apart for whatever reason.

Which meant that exploring this place took like 2 hours before everyone started to get kicked out as the place was closing.

Here are some pictures from the place.

No clue what this was, but the architecture is stunning.

From what I could gather this was the most important structure. Stunning especially with all the details

Yes this is still the same place.

Yeah no clue. This was by the exit but man, whatever this was it must be important.

Very impressive place!

And a great workout because I genuienly cannot put into words how MASSIVE this entire place is.

Probably did 3,000 steps just trying to explore this place, lmao.

Regardless, before being able to complete it a security guard kindly asked to leave as the place was closing.

Oh well, no biggie, it was time to make the pilgrimage to ANOTHER important location.

  1. N Seoul Tower

Say it with me!

Another day, another tower.

This place sits on top of a mountain that you can choose to hike.

Since I was not doing all that the adventure to get here was wild.

I got lost trying to find the bus station since the Korean google maps wasn’t able to keep up with the horrendous 258kbps data I was still locked to.

So after finding and riding a packed bus for 30 miunutes it was time to get to the top!

I’m going to save you the whole spiel and just show you the pictures (there wasn’t much to write home about tbh)

Back to the cloudy sunsets huh

Yeah. This was BEAUTIFUL.

I don’t know what LEDs they use but it was a stunning experience.

This is definitely more spread out than Japan and has a lot more “light” to the buildings.

There’s also a lot more “empty space” which I can only imagine is because of the various mountains around the area.

Regardless, after bumming out at the tower for a couple hours it was time to get back home.

But not before seeing this buccees sticker on the way out.

Had to hold my laughter as this was the most unexpected thing ever

This is a sign of things to come.

  1. Route home

I tried going to a “night market” to check out what the night culture was like.

… just to find out that everything closed at 10pm.

So I decided to cut my losses and head home before the trains (which ran a lot later actually) stopped for the night.

Overall, a very exciting first day in Korea.

Always getting into these insane situations Forward

Hz
