🍱 Delicacy of the Day

Today I got something from Russian Rodent lxst cxntury.

This guy got pretty popular back during the pandemic. You might recognize him from the song Odium, which was heavily played in cringe TikToks.

I’d say this is one of the few artists carrying Traditional Phonk™(not the ear-sore one on sloptify, but the “use samples over slow beats” one)

This is honestly as close as you’ll ever get to a “hip-hop”- orbiting genre in this newsletter.

I’m sending it only because the production is SO GOOD it would be a crime not to.

This one in particular has been a staple over the last 2 years.

I don’t even know why. Everything sounds so ominous and desolate.

Gotta give it to the guy. He builds UNMATCHED ambiances.

The main chorus is incredible. The mix between heavy synths and a simple cowbell never sounded so good.

That part plays randomly once a month and makes me want to hear the song. Today it tipped me over the edge.

Now I can’t lie, this is “acquired taste” territory. It took me a couple of years to even HEAR a song in full.

I started listening to it more over the past couple of months. Today was a pretty big exploration day as I had it in the background.

The easygoing beats combined with incredible sound design make it great for focusing on work.

I recommend trying it for size. Even if its not your thing just listening to it will “expand your mind” and help you try new things.

Njoy.

💭 Quick Drivel

Due to a recent opportunity, my workload has increased a bit.

As such, I’ve been looking for more “focus music” while still trying to discover new things to send here.

Then there’s that annoying thing that makes it so I can’t listen to the same genre for long without switching to a complete polar opposite.

(This is why I send ambient one week and bass house the next)

Now I’ve never been a big hip-hop/rap/whatever enjoyer.

Nothing against it. I just never understood the hype.

Some melodies were okay but most just sounded like 808 pulled all the way to the top. The lyrics/vocals? Yeah… I won’t be talking about that. Not for me.

My biggest exposure has been due to a roommate in highschool. He usually blasted whatever was popular first thing in the morning. Very cool times waking up to what sounded like death threats!

That was like 8 years ago.

Ever since there’s been a huge uptick in the addition of rap in electronic music.

It was already popular in Drum & Bass. Dubstep was also trying it on for size.

But over the years its slowly been expanding to… house.

The day I hear Trance + Rap is the day I have heard everything.

None of it has ever been my style so I just appreciate for what it is and move on.

So yeah, it is kinda odd that I liked this version of “phonk” but I guess its because the focus is more on the beat and the production instead of the… “borrowed” vocal clips.

Idk man, this is called “daily drivel” for a reason.

…what do you mean that’s not a satisfying answer?

Well okay, earlier this year I was listening to some course lesson and the guy said something interesting:

“Whatever got you here won’t get you there. To get to the next level you have to do the opposite of what you were doing. So if you ONLY listen to drum & bass and avoid rap, then maybe its time to listen to some rap”

I just kinda nodded along and went “yeah right, rap? what are we doing here”

Did end up applying that concept to other areas, but I never got (nor plan to) to listen to rap.

I think this is as close as it will get, and thats alright.

But if you’re looking to “do some things” differently, give today’s song a chance.

Maybe it helps you unlock a new level.

…or a new genre to hate and avoid for the rest of your life.

In any case, you’ll have another “experience” to share.

Always avoiding the real thing Forward
