The "CM" tax

Are you paying it right now?

“Principle 1.3 Be radically open-minded and radically transparent.”

That is one of the core principles in Ray Dalio’s fantastic book - Principles.

I’m bringing this up because a common trap listeners fall into is dismissing music because it doesn't fit their 2-4 preferred genres.

I was like this up until 2020. I would avoid EVERYTHING that sounded like house music.

All it took to end years-long dislike was listening to No Mana - Secret Level and going, "Hey. This is actually pretty good!" Today, house is in my top 3 favorite genres.

So how can YOU start removing the close-minded (CM) tax from your life?

Spoiler alert: it's not gonna be new or fantastic...

But the simple way you can avoid it is by...

Listening to a song even if it doesn't fit the genre you like!

Yes. That simple. You’ll be surprised how many people are fiercely opposed to this.

Of course, this doesn't apply to you because you are a diver!

So, in that spirit, here's a song from a genre I ACTIVELY avoid out of embarrassment.

Brostep.

Yes, the ugly, hated child of dubstep. (Riddim isn't real to me. I've given it too many chances and it’s still slop.)

“WAIT. You just said to be open-minded! That isn’t too open-minded from you…”

Well, here’s where the SECOND and more important part of the equation is revealed:

You don't have to like it (after listening to it).

It’s just like trying new shoes on. You put them on, walk around a bit, and then decide if it’s worth taking home.

So here’s the challenge: Give a try to today’s song.

Yes, it has loud, screechy sounds and a fractured production structure—something you've likely heard in a cringe-worthy Minecraft YouTube intros.

But it's GOOD. It has a groove, and a fantastic melody inside. The way it dives and surfaces throughout the song is an experience you can’t get in any other genre.

So what have you got to lose?

Njoy
