🍱 Delicacy of the Day
Narou - A World Away
Got something different for you today.
This is a more vocal heavy song than what we usually send.
This is from Astute Austrian artist Narou.
He specializes in vocal heavy ethereal tracks that are simple but tend to get stuck in your ear.
This one is definitely easygoing and something you can play on the aux without getting the privileges taken away.
Might be a bit too “poppy” but I’d argue its one that does it well.
Njoy.
Tidal includes links to Youtube, Sloptify, and Apple Music.
💭 Quick Drivel
For the next 27 days I’ll be exploring the ridiculous trip from last year
I didn’t have time to write it when it happened. So why not take advantage of Nostalgia Year to re-live some memories, eh?
If you don’t mind or care (no blame there), enjoy the hand-picked songs that made up this trip a lot more special. They’re even better than the amazing stuff we regularly send.
It's 5am.
I rush to the train station to make it to my train on time.
Amd right before the train leaves I jump on the first open wagon.
But when I start looking for my seat...
It doesn’t exist.
I ask a conductor, and she kindly lets me know that I’m on the wrong train.
Sigh
The train was packed, so I had to stand until the next stop.
I got off the train and quickly asked another conductor about which train I was supposed to take
...To which she looked at me puzzled and said “This is the right train”.
Then she pointed at the carriage where my seat was.
And surely enough! There it was.
After that it was a very picturesque ride to the next destination.
Arrival in Jeonju
I uh… found this place after confusing it with Jeju island.
Its this random village that is known for being the birthplace of Bibimbap.
So the plan was simple:
Drop off the bags
Go explore the city
Get some bibimbap
Explore some more.
It was a one day stay so there was no time to waste.
Unfortunately I wasn’t able to check in to the airbnb for 5 more hours so I carried all the luggage for the first adventure.
Which was a problem since this place is not only sunny as but also INCREDIBLY HOT.
I still can’t understand how my Floridian ass isn’t used to this weather, but no amount of sitting in the Miami sun will prepare you for the Asian heat.
Quest for Money.
I tried buying some water from a store before they kindly let me know they didn’t accept cards.
I asked if this was the standard for the town, and they said yes.
No biggie! I just have to find an ATM!
I went to the nearest 7-Eleven to get some cash out.
…and got a message that my card declined the transaction.
I tried again.
Declined. Please contact your bank
A quick Google search later, I found that Korean ATMs don’t work like Japanese ones (duh).
If you want to get cash from a foreign card, you have to find a SPECIFIC ATM from a bank that allows it.
And so the journey began!
The only problem was that there were only 3 banks in the town and they were all 15-30 minute walks from each other.
So the pilgrimage began to the first bank.
They were over the moon when I asked for some cash. “Sure! We’ll just have you fill out a bunch of paperwork and take a 10% fee!” said the teller.
That wasn’t happening, so I waddled over 30 minutes to the next bank where they had the magical ATM.
…Which I also had a problem with.
My card got locked due to all the attempts, which prompted a call to the bank to get it unlocked.
Regardless, I got enough cash to survive the next 8 days and started the pilgrimage to the next location.
City center exploration.
The cool thing about this place is that all the attractions were close together.
There was the main temple:

Yeah this place was MASSIVE.

The cathedral.

This random spot in the edge of the city which I was going to go to before seeing spiders the size of my head (that got me terrified of this town from there on)

I quickly went into each before rushing to check in to the airbnb to drop off this heavy ass backpack and get some lunch.
Bibimbap.
Most of these restaurants opened until 1 so after getting all the exploration out of the way I had to see what the birthplace of bibimbap had in store!

It was… underwhelming.
The spice almost killed me but aside from that it didn’t have much flavor.
It was no problem though, I still enjoyed the experience as it was my first time having this dish.
It’s not even the restaurants fault…
The American’t palate™is already accustomed to hyper-processed sludge, and anything without enough salt or sugar to kill an adult elephant doesn’t register as food.
Night market visit.
By this point it was already 7pm, which meant the sun was long gone and the night markets would emerge.
So I went to the market nearby and got a taste of the culture.
There was a lot of food vendors, fair games, and some random singing.

I gambled with my life by getting some food stand chicken

And an oreo dessert

Arguably more dangerous than the chicken.
After this it was time to head back home as I had to wake up at 5 am again to get the most out of tomorrow.
Always Forward
