What learning English can teach you about music.
Or just about anything.
"I don't think I can do this." My coworker said this morning.
"Why?" I asked
"Because it feels like I'm just going in circles."
"Well... How did you do it the first time?"
"I started with the consonants"
"Then start there."
We talked about how to learn English faster since she moved in a couple of months ago and is finding it hard to communicate.
The issue was that she was using incompatible rules, alphabet and grammar to speak a very complicated language (as they all are, lol)…
Or as I called it: thinking in Spanish to speak English
Worse of all, she started by learning grammar, which is known to be among the most annoying aspects of English.
Talk about playing checkers when trying to play chess.
It’s not her fault tho, no one really teaches you how to learn English and her school in Venezuela did a horrible job.
So I told her to start with the alphabet and take it from there.
Why the alphabet?
Because as all languages - like systems - have fundamentals to build upon. The alphabet teaches you how to say and read each letter, which then you use to read words and understand grammar.
Music works the same way.
Have you considered that every genre of music is its OWN language?
No matter what it is, it has a special factor that makes it stand out.
It can be the lyrics, sounds, or atrocious amounts of bass...
But it makes you instantly recognize it and go "oh yes, that's Mongolian throat singing. I LOVE the bass in Mongolian throat singing!"
And just like some languages sound like borderline summoning chants (Dutch) some genres sound like - and i’m being generous here - dog water (Riddim)
It doesn’t stop there…
Getting into a new music genre works the same way as learning a new language.
You start with the Mainstream (alphabet) and then make your way down to the underground as you look to satiate that endless hunger for new sounds (grammar)
If you think it's a shoddy tie-in...
Go find ANOTHER music newsletter that won't be as fun as this one.
On to today's Langua- I mean song.
This is from the Witch House tongue (or genre - if you're boring)
It has the perfect energy for this Wodensday and has the potential to have you grooving wherever you stand.
There’s a surprise in the middle of the song, just to keep you in your toes.
And to spice it up, it has lyrics in Russian (lol)
If you don't understand a lick of what it means, may I recommend starting with the dictionary?
Njoy.
Genre: Witch House
