Present Swords
Used some today, very cool
A couple of hours ago we went to a real dojo to train with real Katanas.
Yeah, that’s one of the most AMERICAN TOURIST™️ things to do, but there’s a twist to all this.
Now when we first saw it, swinging swords seemed simple enough.
I mean come on, swinging a sword around. How hard would it be?
Spoiler alert: VERY complicated.
It’s a lot of moving back and forth, keeping your arms right, angling the sword the right way, making sure you sheathe and unsheathe the right way and more.
Heck, there are DOZENS of schools, each with their own unique set of 100+ moves.
The trainer (a 22-year-old who’s been training Katana since he’s 12) was certainly knowledgeable and… patient.
Now as a TLDR of the experience.:
I can’t swing for CRAP. The teacher was one wrong move away from cutting me down on the spot.
Meanwhile, hyperoxia is well on his way to becoming a Katana master.
They had us cut some paper mats to “show we learned,” and it was a very cool experience to actually cut something with a sword. But again, harder than it looks.
Now I’m not telling you this for show.
There’s an important lesson here about the art of swordsmanship.
On one intermission, the teacher went over the concept of Iai.
In short, it’s about being present in the moment and reacting accordingly to one's surroundings.
Of course, it was essential back then; the number of wars and conflicts old civilizations used to have was insane. I mean they carried swords as a daily carry, what does that tell you?
But now that we live in an era of endless distractions, it’s almost IMPOSSIBLE to be present.
Which is a damn shame because WOW this world has a lot to offer.
And while I don’t have a one-size-fits-all solution…
I do have a gorgeous song you can use to bring yourself back to reality and into the present moment.
This is a gem by John Hopkins (No, not the hospital).
It’s a song that's phenomenal for overwhelm, something about it is relaxing and easygoing.
The buildup to drop combo is absolutely phenomenal and trust me, this one is a beautiful song to just experience.
Give it a shot, I ain’t a therapist but know my way around music.
