💭 Quick Drivel
For the next 15 days I’ll be exploring the ridiculous trip from last year
I didn’t have time to write it when it happened. So why not take advantage of Nostalgia Year to re-live some memories, eh?
If you don’t mind or care (no blame there), enjoy the hand-picked songs that made up this trip a lot more special. They’re even better than the amazing stuff we regularly send.
It’s 11am.
I’m still sick as a dog.
Regardless, I paid for the whole trip so I’m using the whole trip.
First order of business: find something to do.
And what better place to start than the internet?
Scouted some Reddit threads (who also didn't really know what to recommend other than beach and food for non party people)
Asked ChatGPT (who recommended walking around Patong Street and going to the beach, despite me saying I don't party)
And finally ended on TripAdvisor.
This is when I saw something interesting.
“Elephant sanctuary tour (FREE TRANSPORTATION)”
You're saying I get free rides? Sign me up!
Didn't really know where I was going. Something about elephants, it didn't seem relevant to the posting, though.
Free ride!
For all the complaints I have about Miami traffic and roads, I think we have it better.
It's genuinely amusing to see how people drive here without crashing at least twice.
Also these cars are built out of that one metal from the black panther place because tanking that many potholes can't be good for the car.
Regardless, after a very picturesque pilgrimage, we made it to this random park.
It was this place in the middle of the jungle. It seemed popular because of all the tourists.
They had some neat rules though.
THERE IS NO SHOWERING the elephants. It damages their skin and hurts them.
THERE’S NO ELEPHANT RIDING; that's inhumane, and they don’t support that.
Don't let your kid near the elephants (most people ignored this one)
Don't make any loud noises that could scare the elephants
Then they gave everyone a basket of bananas and told us to follow them.
They brought us to a spot, and elephants started spawning in.
“Alright! Go feed them the bananas; these animals have to eat a lot.”
It was honestly a pretty scary experience.

Seeing a trunk approach you and feel it touch your hand awakened a temporary primal fear reaction.
But it was insanely interesting to see a trunk navigate and do zigzags to pick up a banana.
They are very gentle creatures, though.
Then, once everyone was out of bananas, the elephants left, and so did we.
They told us more about this park. It was a rescue center. Every elephant in their care comes from circuses or elephant ride tours.
It was pretty good to see. Especially since once they get old they just get thrown out and abandoned.
Then they took us to this open field place where we could see them.
“Alright, elephants don't mind being petted; just don't pet this elephant. She’s a recent circus rescue and she still doesn't trust humans”
They did let us pet one and uh…
They feel incredibly leathery and they’re also hairier than what I expected.
After that they took us to make rice balls (mixed with bananas and fruits")
I guess in Asia even the elephants eat rice huh…
After that, the tour concluded.
Which might sound like too little time, but the whole thing was like 2 hours lmao.
I did learn a lot about elephants and their cultural significance to Thailand.
About their insane memory and how they lead packs.
Another gross but intriguing thing is that elephant babies eat their moms' poop for 6 months to get the defenses necessary to survive.
Then they gave me a ride back to the hotel. By the time I got there it was like 5pm.
So I decided to do more exploring around the area.
Dinner
This was the first meal in Thailand.
I tried asking about some traditional dishes and they recommended a seafood pad thai and shrimp cakes.
It was pretty good!
Return to hotel
I was pretty exhausted and tired after this whole debacle. I was also getting sicker (since it was raining all day), so I called it early.
After all tomorrow is an early wakeup.
