Behind the Artist's mind.
It's... complicated.
If you’ve ever wondered about the process behind making music, this will be a masterclass.
This is part 2 of the Dumpsterview with Tutara Peak. Part 1 is here.
A couple of people said it read robotic, which… yeah.
It was my first ever interview, so it was a bit nerve-wracking. But as everything, it can only improve and get better.
Before we get into it, here’s the song of the day, it’s the last song in the aforementioned EP.
No spoilers about what it’s about, but there’s a special feeling attached to it. It’s a gorgeous song altogether.
The melody in it is addicting and guitars rarely sounds this good.
In any case, it’s a great way to start Fridee night.
Njoy.
Interview below.
Hz: Alright, so far we’ve gone into Crop Circles, Telescope, and Picture of Me. So now let’s go into Tractor Beams.
TP: So that one made it to the EP at the last minute. Basically, it was a song I worked with Mark Fractures…
We're good friends. I've only known him since this year, but he's moved to London from Melbourne and we've worked lot on a lot of more music this year.
This was the first song that we properly started together. not together, but I started the song about two years ago, just before I went to LA. Then I sent him the beat, and he just did this killer topline over it.
And one thing I found really interesting is how we can almost find meaning in things that maybe didn't have meaning.
So he's a very very prolific songwriter. I mean his credits are ridiculous.
He's done a lot of topline vocals for other people's songs and from my perspective I don't know how you can keep coming up with meaningful lyrics if you're writing constantly.
So essentially he wrote these lyrics I didn't give him any direction.
I gave him a subtle direction and said that “I kind of thinking I want to put this on the EP”, “sonically it sounds similar”. “ideas of the EP as feeling lost or things like that” and basically came back with this song.
So then I had to make the song sound good to live up to how good his vocals were.
My interpretation of his lyrics, which I think is different from his interpretation, is that in the context of the song, you're feeling lost until you find a person.
And I didn't even know that perspective. But one thing that I thought was amazing about this song is that so many people have got different perspectives of what this song means.
And I think that's the ultimate type of song.
That song is about feeling lost and a person making you feel at home and how they make you feel alive and how they can make you experience things and how it can almost allude to some idea of nostalgia basically.
That's why for me that was always a song that was added at the end because initially I wasn't going to have that song because it didn't come throughout this same process all the other songs did.
So it's a little bit of an outlier. and also I didn't have as much input on the lyrics.
But when he kind of sent over the lyrics and I heard the song, the lyrics fit in for me. but again, I don't think that was intentional on his end.
I think it was just like he wrote some lyrics that he liked. You know what I mean?
But to me, it was like, wow, this actually fits so well…
Hz: Wow there’s a lot of gold in that one. So, I was an extra in a movie once and I haven’t been the same since. Were you actually an extra in a movie?
TP: No laughs.
So get this, right…
Years ago when I wanted to get into composing for film, one way I thought to get into it was basically sign up to be an extra.
And probably over the past five years I've had 10 offers to be an extra. I mean for multi- people type things.
Anyway, every single one, and I kid you not, every single one because they come up quite late, within two days notice, every single one I haven't been able to make, and I want to do it one day.
So I have not been an extra in a movie yet…
But basically the idea behind that song I started this with Nattica and again we were describing very visual lyrics and basically the song is about feeling like you're not in control over things that you should have control over.
So me and my fiance we were basically just back and forth just thinking of song title ideas. and one consistent phrase at the end of each song title was and I haven't been the same since.
So, we came up with lots of different things like I don't know I tried Flamin' Hot Cheetos Doritos for the first time and I haven't been the same since and all these random things…
And then we came up with the idea of I was an extra in my own movie and I haven't been the same since.
And the idea behind that song title is extra in your own movie, you should usually be the main character.
But feeling like you're an extra in your own movie is almost feeling like you're a passenger in your own car. It's a weird feeling. and again, your own movie is something you should have control over…
Because It's your movie. But feeling like an extra just feels like you're just like, NPC vibes. But yeah, pretty much.
Hz: was there any event that triggered you remember where you were not in control that inspired the song?
TP: Yeah. I mean, so, good songs come out completely randomly, and you really don't know when they're going to happen, but if you're feeling really inspired and itchy to write something, you have to get to it.
There was a long period of time where I just hadn't made anything that I liked whatsoever.
During this period of time I felt a lot of imposter syndrome…
That sounds ridiculous but I just didn't feel like I could actually string together a song anymore!
And I think half of that is to do with I had changed my process of how I make music so ext to such an extreme that I found it difficult writing music
And there was a long period of time where I just hadn't made anything that I liked whatsoever. So basically one day I luckily came up with this song just completely by accident and it did feel like a blessing but it didn't feel like I was in control of any of it.
It just kind of happened and just sort of fell out.
But again, this was during a period where I was just directionless. didn't really know what I was doing and I didn't know what was going to happen next…
And I think that's something that really scares me. not feeling one step ahead.
But again, this is a feeling I've consoled with that actually not knowing where the road is going to go is a good thing as well.
It's all about perspective.
Hz: That's a pretty good one. Okay, so what’s your favorite Sport?
TP: Probably badminton. I used to be big into skateboarding
But the era I live now kind of sucks for skateboarding. So, I've got a lot more into Babington. What about you?
Hz: I like lifting heavy objects to make the voices go away. Not as cool as skateboarding though.
TP: I envy you. I can't do that.
I really got into skateboarding when I used to live in London because London's just an amazing place to skate around.
But I haven't really done it for years now. I guess I've just been so busy doing other stuff, but I'll get back into it at some point.
Hz: All right, cool. So about the song? What is the source of that? Because it's really energetic. It's really fun.
TP: Yeah, humbled to hear that. So, that song again was called Sports right from the get-go.
I think a common theme here is probably when I've come up with a song, on the first day after finishing just the first idea of it.
If I'm calling it something immediately, I know it should be called that. It usually sticks throughout the whole thing.
And I called it Sports because again, I knew this was going to be on the EP. It was also the first song I wrote this year.
I liked the idea of the term sports because it kind of related to the competition.
And I was always imagining a 100 meter sprint or whatever. I always had this visual for a 100 meter sprint in my mind. When you're competing against however many runners, it can be a very focused… how do I describe it?…
It's something that you train by yourself. You have people helping you and supporting you, but you train by yourself and you're very focused with it.
I did a lot of research into Olympic athletes. I'm a big rabbit hole diver with many things and I went down a rabbit hole of essentially researching Olympic athletes and the mindset behind them…
And one thing I found really interesting about athletes in particular Olympic athletes is that a lot of them have addictive personalities because they are driven to achieve things.
They also have a north star which is to make it to the Olympics basically every four years or so.
And essentially, I guess I sort of relate the Olympics.
The main thing that you're holding then is The Olympic torch. And that kind of then related me to the idea of a torch a flashlight in the dark basically alluding to the idea that you're also by yourself.
I don't know. my mind just kind of wanders and wanders until I'm like, " that's a pretty interesting trail." You know what I mean?
but I think the interesting thing with this in particular is the video because I knew I wanted to do one performance video for this EP.
Sports was the most energetic and I thought it was the most fitting.
And for the visual direction for this video, I clipped lots of Olympic sports from the 70s and basically just put them on a projector and projected them on myself while I was playing guitar and stuff.
Again, it's might be a little bit of an outlier for the rest EP…
But also just I think the rest the other songs, they kind of felt a little bit reserved in most moments.
There wasn't a song that really just blasted you with energy and I think I was really missing that. so I just thought f*** I'm going to get this song on the EP.
It sounds good. I really like it, so why not?
Hz: Yeah it’s my favorite of the EP. The energy is unmatched. Okay, last but not least Bonfire.
TP: So, Bonfire that's the oldest song on there, I think. started beginning of 2022 roughly.
and basically the song never changed that much, but I met a guy called Matthew Adam Green through Tik Tok funnily enough.
I released a song called Wind Atlas with my friend Flaws and when I put it out on TikTok Matthew just found the song and he was like, "Yo, love this. We should definitely work on stuff."
So I Listened to his stuff and I was astounded by his voice.
So basically I just sent him Bonfire. I was like, "I've got this thing that I don't really know what to do with."
And then he just laid down this crazy stuff. and it just worked.
He added such a unique feeling to this song. I think as well sonically, this song is probably not the most consistent with the rest of the EP.
However, the meanings behind this song is basically trying to allude to the feeling of being literally around a bonfire with your friends and just having a good time.
Kind of alludes to the idea that at the end of this EP, you just sort of reconnect with old friends and actually realize they're kind of who you are today.
but it's much more of a happy one. It's much more of like a soulful one. yeah, it's just, marshmallows over an open fire type vibe.
Hz: So the album begins with self-reflection and then goes through all these stages until reaching fulfillment at the end essentially.
TP: I guess that's a good way to put it. Yeah. I should have just said that. There you are pretty much. Laughs
